The approach promises to cut costs, improve efficiency, and significantly reduce the environmental footprint of deep drilling operations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funded by the\u00a0<strong>European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder programme<\/strong>\u00a0under\u00a0<strong>Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement No. 101046937)<\/strong>, DeepU has been coordinated by the\u00a0<strong>University of Padua<\/strong>\u00a0and then\u00a0<strong>RED SRL<\/strong>, in collaboration with\u00a0<strong>Prevent GmbH<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Fraunhofer IAPT<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Geoserv Ltd<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>University of Wroclaw<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche-IGG<\/strong>, representing four European countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newly developed prototype combines three essential functions in a single drill string and\u00a0 a drilling head:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Directing the laser beam <\/strong>to drill rock with precision<\/li>\n<li><strong>Channeling the nitrogen flow<\/strong>to remove particles and cool the borehole walls<\/li>\n<li><strong>Providing<\/strong> <strong>a robust<\/strong> <strong>structure <\/strong><strong>for the drilling operation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond its technical achievements, the project identified optimal laser settings for different rock types, evaluated environmental and safety standards to ensure responsible deployment, and explored potential markets for large-scale technical applications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cReaching the field-testing stage is a key step toward making geothermal energy a reliable, cost-effective source available anytime, anywhere in the world,\u201d said Luc Pockel\u00e9, Project Coordinator at RED SRL. \u201cWith DeepU, we can tap into the Earth\u2019s heat in a cleaner, smarter way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By advancing to real-world testing, DeepU moves closer to its goal of\u00a0<strong>turning the planet\u2019s natural heat into a practical, sustainable energy source<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 helping Europe move towards a resilient, low-carbon future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>About DeepU<\/strong><br \/>DeepU is a European research and innovation project funded by the\u00a0<strong>European Innovation Council (EIC)<\/strong>\u00a0under the\u00a0<strong>Horizon Europe<\/strong>\u00a0programme (G.A. <strong>101046937)<\/strong>.
